Through the ILE project, librarians and course instructors collaborate to design an additional component of an existing research project that directly addresses the information literacy elements required to complete the project. For each course, an online page is crafted and divided into components mapped to the standards of information literacy. The page features objectives for each standard, a customizable series of online tutorials, and multiple ways to assess the student's ability to learn and transfer the knowledge into a contextualized application. Further, instructors are given the tools to provide feedback on each assessed component thus addressing demonstrated weak areas of student understanding. Through the ILE project, students learn how to better define a research question or thesis, access scholarly information in a variety of formats, critically evaluate information quality, ethically and legally use information to accomplish a specific purpose, and produce better final products.

Project benefits: The Library would have a demonstrably coherent approach to the delivery of information literacy across the curriculum and to all levels of undergraduate and postgraduate student, providing a more efficient way of developing information literacy. The project would create a learning environment in which students will develop life-long and transferable information literacy skills. Academic staff will have available a mechanism by which they can integrate IL skills into their teaching. Project Deliverables A toolkit of learning activities both within Blackboard and through other means that address the information literacy needs of undergraduate and postgraduate students. Guidelines for individual Schools as to the most effective way of utilizing the toolkit. Guidelines for Library staff to allow them to support both students and staff in the use of the toolkit.

This project involves running a series of three awareness raising workshops for secondary school teachers and librarians, to equip them with the knowledge and skills to provide guidance to pupils on avoiding plagiarism. The materials from the workshops will be put together into a package designed for use in cascade training within schools. Christine�??s previous Information literacy project experience includes the Scottish Library and Information Council (SLIC) Information Handling Skills.
The project has therefore expanded to include the following: -Advocacy on behalf of information literacy for education and wider community -Working with information literacy champions both UK and worldwide -Researching and promoting information literacy in the workplace -Identifying and working with partners, both in education and the wider community -Researching the role of information literacy in continuing professional development to develop an information literacy framework, with cross-sector partners linking primary, secondary and tertiary education to lifelong learning including workplace and adult literacies agendas.

The investigations are based on both the Washington State Academic Learning Requirements (EALRS) and the Bellingham Public Schools Essential Student Learning Goals.
Information and research based learning has the potential to reinvigorate undergraduate education. Successful implementation requires attention be directed toward developing students' abilities to thrive in this type of environment, supporting faculty exploration of new teaching approaches in the classroom and online, and providing institutional resources to tranform course curriculum while supporting collaboration. Key components of the Berkeley plan include: * building a community of faculty dedicated to exploring new approaches for information and research based learning; * developing a library reconceived as a center for learning and instructional expertise; * creating opportunities for academic support units to work collaboratively to provide consultative support to faculty that can inform course design and implementation.
